UHP 50th: Inside Scoop

Honors alumni and current Honors students came together in celebration of 50 years of intellectual risk-taking, leadership in a diverse and complex world, and action on behalf of positive social change.

"It is not the program itself we are celebrating, but it is all of you that we are honoring and celebrating this weekend. You are what make this program," said Director Dave Furlow proudly during Friday night's alumni dinner. The 50th Honors Celebration brought together new and old faces through an alumni dinner, alumni-student luncheon, and various demonstrations and tours.

On October 11th and 12th, 2019, the University Honors Program had the distinct pleasure of recognizing the 50th anniversary of the founding of Integrated Studies in 1969, and celebrating its legacy that helped shape, along with the Davis Honors Challenge, the program we have today.

“OK, Jesse, you say here that you can juggle. Could you step up on stage and juggle for us?”

Jesse didn’t expect this and looks back at me blankly. “I don’t have anything to juggle.”

“Can someone help him out?”

My tutors rummaged around in their backpacks. One tossed him an orange. Another an apple. A third a can of soda. It turned out Jesse was a good juggler.

“Can you juggle chain saws?” I ask him.

He looks dumbfounded and shakes his head no.
