ISHP Faculty Honored for Teaching Excellence

Once again this past year, faculty members in the Integrated Studies Honors Program (ISHP) have been honored for teaching excellence. Professor Subhash Risbud who has taught a seminar on the biological and materials sciences for the ISHP received a 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award from the Academic Senate of the UC Davis campus. Eric Schroeder, who has taught numerous courses for the ISHP including the very popular Playing Shakespeare class each spring, received the James H. Meyer Award Distinguished Achievement Award of the Academic Federation.

Professor John Boe, who teaches very popular storytelling classes in the ISHP, has been named one of four winners of the Phi Beta Kappa Northern California Association's Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Boe was honored at a dinner at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club on May 6, 2007 where he received a certificate and a $500 honorarium.

Risbud is the latest of many Distinguished Teaching Award winners who have taught courses in the ISHP. Other award winners (and the year in which they received their award) are David Robertson (1979), Jessica Utts (1984), Dennis Dingemans (1990), Jay Mechling (1993), Peter Lindert (1995), James Shackelford, Director of the Integrated Studies Honors Program (2004), and Naomi Janowitz (2006). Also, in the Fall of 2003, Terence Murphy was recognized with the Distinguished Teaching Award of the Division of Biological Sciences.

In 2006, another ISHP faculty member was recognized as among the finest on the UC Davis campus. The highest honor bestowed by the UC Davis campus for teaching excellence is the UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement. Given annually by the UC Davis Foundation since 1987, this singular award honors a faculty member who has combined excellence in undergraduate teaching with the highest levels of scholarly research. The Integrated Studies Honors Program is proud of the fact that, for 2006, Jay Mechling was given this honor. The ISHP is doubly proud that Peter Lindert received this honor in 1999.

On May 20, 2004, Jared Haynes received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Academic Federation of UC Davis. This award is given in recognition of the contributions made to the teaching mission of the Davis campus by non-Senate faculty members. Jared joins fellow University Writing Program Lecturers John Boe and Eric Schroeder who have received this recognition in the past. Boe received his award in 1991 and Schroeder received his award in 1996.
